Monday, March 19, 2007the air car
Gizmag reports on one of the most intriguing vehicles to slowly make its way into production, the air car, a zero pollution automobile that runs on compressed air! Zero pollution, runs on air, how cool is that? Cool enough that the only exhaust is clean air, at 0 to 15 degrees below zero. The Minicat is a small, cute three seater that can reach speeds at about 68 mph; this is a city car, or at least a city commuter car. With an operating cost of about $1.34 to 62 miles, and a range of 186 miles, it's hard not to think about getting one, or at least looking into something like it. The only drawback would be the lack of compressed air filling stations, but the company already thought of that with an onboard compressor that can be plugged into a 220v system and recharge or refill the tank in 3 to 4 hours.
At a cost of approximately $10,682, the minicat seems to be a reasonable mode of transport, or at least a backup to your giant SUV. At just over eight and a half feet long and five feet tall and wide, I would seriously think about this as a cheap car for the city. It also comes in family, taxi, van and pick-up truck. The van would be a great delivery truck for the city if you ask me, nothing but local stops, with a max load of 1100 pounds. When you can get one, who knows, it seems to be moving along slowly but with lots of interest. On the other end of the spectrum, you have the Tesla roadster, a 100% electric car with acceleration of 0 to 60 in about 4 seconds, faster than a Porsche, a top speed of 130mph and a range of 250 miles. With all this performance it costs about a measly $92,000, a drop in the bucket if you ask me. I do like this car, its sporty, zero emission and a plug in, though your power grid needs to be a zero emission plant to really make the car zero emission, but you can also have a solar panel array installed at your home and charge off of that. |
